Mindset Monday

I’d like to talk about this buzz word that is now getting lots of attention …

  • Mindset

What does it mean to you?

  1. Some believe it’s Mindfulness.
  2. Others believe it’s BS.
  3. I have my opinions.

However, let’s start here.

Definition: The established set of attitudes held by someone

I like this definition.

Simple.

Concise.

And spot on.

Our attitudes, determine our outcome.

Your life is a result of your choices.

Not something that happened to you.

Not what someone did to you.

Rather, the choices you made in response to your environment.

Good or Bad … it’s yours to own.

The best part is, you can change your attitude, right?

I remember getting the … “You need an attitude adjustment young man” from those who felt I had a poor attitude in my youth.

Some were right.

Some were not.

However, nothing they said was going to make me do a damn thing.

I didn’t like anyone telling me what to do.

I’d bet you don’t either, eh?

Conversely, had I not started looking in the mirror as the proverbial ‘sh*t hit the fan’ …

I’d still be blaming others for my pain and looking for attention from all the ‘bad stuff’ that happened to me.

That’s one type of Mindset … isn’t it?

Maybe you know someone similar.

Accept, that mindset didn’t move me towards the life I knew I should be living, deep down.

That Mindset taught me how to put me first … not others.

That Mindset kept me working for others … and not myself.

That Mindset was active because of the choices I made as a kid, in response to my environment.

And for that, I suffered … greatly.

  • In Relationships.
  • In Romance.
  • In Life.

Now, my ‘bad programming’ was not my fault.

Until I was about 18 and capable of understanding I was an adult who could make my own choices.

And I kept making the bad ones.

You see, you’re not responsible for the ‘bad programming’ and crappy things people did or said to you … it wasn’t YOUR fault.

What is your fault (and was mine) is perpetuating that program, even when it’s served it’s purpose and no longer works for you.

Kind of like banging your head on the wall …

STOP IT!

One example I have is; when I was 5 or 6, my uncle said to me “John, don’t swallow toothpaste when you’re brushing, your teeth will get yellow …”

I can tell you this … I have NOT EVER consciously swallowed toothpaste.

And Dental fluorosis is a real thing, so he wasn’t lying.

It just stuck with me.

To this day.

And as an adult, I can look at that Mindset (my attitude regarding toothpaste) through a different (adult) lens.

I realized nothing was going to change until I changed the way I looked at it.

It used to freak me out when I was brushing … now, I just brush.

Do you feel me?

I’m sure you had someone say something that stuck with you …

What’s one Mindset you had as a kid, that no longer serves you now?

P.S. Here are 4 more ways you can become happier and healthier:

1. Podcasts

Some of the greatest insights and healing for me, have come from listening to podcasts in the last few years. This long-form type of communication, I’ve found, has been extremely important for understanding context, while learning how to make sustainable change.

That’s why I have started to find ways to get our story on some podcasts, and give you an opportunity to really go deep with us, and see what we’re all about. That way, you can decide if this tribe fits your personality. Click the link below to go to our podcast page, where you can find all our episodes!
