One of my students sent me an email a couple days back letting me know that she has bursitis in her left thumb, and will have a harder time gripping things like the Kettlebells and Barbells we use, as she heals.
She had been having some pain for awhile and as she put it, “Mom’s tend to ignore our own stuff, hoping it will go away and get better …”
Only after some pretty excruciating pain and ‘nervy tingles’ in her arm did she seek out a medical professional, which was good.
Now, I never wish pain on anyone, however, if you ignore it long enough, it will bite you and you will have deserved it – for not playing nice.
Here’s the thing, I know the ignoring thing is something ‘everyone does’ and Moms are good at it for sure …. until ….
The big takeaway point here is, remember who is watching you ignore yourself.
They will most certainly think that they themselves are not worthy of self-care, and so, will ignore their pain … until …
This is Conditioning 101 …. Pavlov’s Dogs, anyone?
Moms, it’s time we reverse this trend of putting yourself last and taking care of everyone else or worrying about everyone else, first.
It does nobody involved any good.
Neither does feeling guilty … a medicine I needed to swallow.
Now, I know this logic will not stop people from taking care of others, worrying or feeling guilty … how silly of me to think that possible … no no, John …
What I’m getting at, in my typical roundabout make-you-think type way is, you are no good to anybody if you are sick, in pain, hurting, feeling guilty or worse, because you neglected yourself.
That’s actually closer to the definition of selfish …
The often ‘well-intentioned’ putting off of ones health is actually a detriment because it keeps you from serving them, but it’s not your fault, you’ve been conditioned to believe that’s how it’s supposed to be, which is bollocks …
Here’s how it’s supposed to be.
You put you first in all situations, that way, if your services are ever needed, you are always in mental and physical shape to not only handle it, but dictate the outcome, not be reactive to it.
Easier said than done, however, in the case of my student with the Bursitis, her diagnosis was that she basically needs to rest, not grip with the thumb and forefinger as much and that’s about it.
Not a lot of context … however, it is what needs to happen and she’s in luck because Sarah and I have had our share of performance injuries, we know how to heal and what exercises to do to facilitate that.
Hint: It’s not sitting on our a$$e$ doing nothing …
This fast tracks things for our students.
So much so, that they trust in us to ask our opinions about supplements and things they’ve heard worked for others.
We even went over a list of supplements, holistic medications and healing modalities I used, to come back from my 20 year old shoulder injury.
I wrote it all down for them and they were appreciative.
It’s empowering to have options in your hand, and even more empowering to actually know which option works best.
You only get their if you do the work of getting to know what you need, and you can’t do it if you’re always pushing it off to ‘take care of others’.
Imagine being able to share a successful story of healing from your own experience, instead of needing to be healed because you don’t have that experience.
So, if you have Arthritis, Bursitis, or Whateveritis, put yourself first and heal it, before it comes back and knocks you out of the game and you’re useless to your team.

1. Podcasts
Some of the greatest insights and healing for me, have come from listening to podcasts in the last few years. This long-form type of communication, I’ve found, has been extremely important for understanding context, while learning how to make sustainable change.
That’s why I have started to find ways to get our story on some podcasts, and give you an opportunity to really go deep with us, and see what we’re all about. That way, you can decide if this tribe fits your personality. Click the link below to go to our podcast page, where you can find all our episodes!
2. Rise
Rise is the story of ‘never feeling powerful … to … never feeling powerless’. It’s about John Bair’s life, why he does what he does and how his suffering created happiness.
This handwritten book takes you through an intimate, yet, self-revealing journey, which allows you to implant yourself into the story, as it relates to your own, and reveal the steps you’ll need to take, in order to make change a successful reality.
