Why is strength important?

Is strength important to you?

It’s ok if it’s not, I’m just curious as to why … or why not …

Maybe it helps if we define strength first, or at least, I’ll share my version.

To me, strength is the ability to overcome.

Which means strength can take many forms.

You can overcome illness, breakups, life changes, deaths of loved ones, yourself, and even resistance in the weight room – another thing to overcome.

I believe strength is important in all those areas, however, it’s hard to build all that strength without first being ‘weak’.

Without the experience of not being able to overcome, how could you ever muster the courage to overcome, or even know what that feels like?

That’s why I believe it’s important to willingly subject yourself to things that make you uncomfortable, as to build the ‘resilience muscles’, if you will.

One of the things people can choose willingly is progressive resistance training, yet, it’s one of the last things people do for themselves.

Working your muscles hard and really grinding to push your body, with a rate of perceived exertion that is outside your comfort zone, will translate into dealing with stresses outside of the weight room better, as well.

However, I get that it’s hard to want to train your muscles after you’re mind has been bombarded all day with thoughts of being unworthy, not good enough, managing emotional roller coasters, having anxiety attacks or depressive spirals and generally being stressed out beyond our ability to recover.

Welcome to the information and technology age …

How does one stop this madness?

Simple.

Give yourself permission to change … something.

Even if that something is just to stop being so stressed out.

Pulling that permission string will unravel your ‘ball of yarn’ a bit, and the next step will reveal itself in the form of the next thing you’ll need to overcome.

The cool thing is, when you choose to give yourself permission, the things that used to hold you back no longer have power over you, and the hard stuff becomes less hard.

That doesn’t mean there will be no work, it actually just means that the work that needs to be done is work you CHOOSE to do … and shouldn’t be overwhelming, rather, it should be invigorating.

That leads to momentum, and also gives you the evidence you’ll need to continue ‘pushing uphill’ against the resistance of life, instead of always giving up and starting over again.

Take it from someone who was diagnosed with severe depression at age 8 (30 years ago) and has daily darkness that makes me question life: Strength has a greater purpose.

When I go and push my body, my mind has to get on board, and thus, it springboards those dangerous, wandering thoughts into the action of surviving the moment – which teaches me all over, every day, that I have a choice in my thoughts, not the other way around.

That’s why strength is important (for me) … the more I overcome, the less I want to leave this world early and the greater my purpose becomes.

What does strength do for you?
