Barbell Deadlift Techniques

I was talking with my buddy Gerry a few weeks back, around the Super Bowl, who is a police officer, great guy, and also a lifting enthusiast, if you will.

I had posted a picture of myself in a Kansas City Chiefs Jersey because that’s who I wanted to win, and he was a San Francisco Forty Niners Fan, so he sent me private message to razz me a bit.

I assured him the player I was wearing, Derrick Thomas, was a long time favorite from when I was a kid, as he played in the late 80’s, early nineties.

I also like Joe Montana and the Niners too, however, I wanted the Chiefs to win that day, and got my wish.

The point of that interlude was that we got to talking after our exchange, and he told me one of his goals this year was to Dead Lift 350 pounds.

I told him if there was anything I could do to assist, I’d be happy to take a look at where he was at currently.

He said he was up for it, so I asked him to post a video in our BADASS group, which is FREE to join by the way, and yesterday he did.

The Dead Lift is one of, if not, my favorite exercises and after having NOT been able to do them the way I wanted for a few years while I healed my shoulder, I’m back at it now.

It’s one of the exercises I mentioned in an email a few months back, where I stated that a person can and should be able to Dead Lift at least double their body weight.

The reason I state that is because the Dead Lift is actually known as the ‘Health Lift’, for it’s uncanny ability to restore overall health and well-being – seriously, Google it …

That may sound like a lot of weight, however, a recent example is I’ve been coaching a boys lacrosse team locally in Strength and Conditioning.

One young freshman was about 100 to 105 pounds soaking wet, and when I met him in November his knees hurt from growing pains, plus he could barely get 95 pounds off the ground for 1 repetition, without pain.

He would have seemed ‘behind the eight ball’, so to speak.

However, part of why his knees hurt was horrible form and once we corrected that by practicing lighter weights for better reps, he progressed and started to see rapid improvement.

So much so, that during our last round of testing about a week ago, he hit 170 pounds for 2 repetitions, with no pain, and his body weight is now almost 108 pounds.

He went from barely being able to do .90 percent of his body weight with pain, to 1.57 times his body weight with correct form and some practice, plus NO pain ; -)

He never actually lifted 170 pounds in practice either, but because his body had gotten stronger overall, it could handle more load safely

He’s 14, lol, so it can’t be complicated and hard, or I’ll lose him.

For Gerry, I was able to film a video in our group on Facebook (mentioned it above) and leave it there for him, and all of you who wish to check it out, to use as a reference guide.

If you’re interested in learning how to safely pick up more weight to build a strong, lean, stable, not-bulky, fat-burning, calorie-blasting-muscle-suit AND get some incidental ‘cardio’, then you might want to watch this video.

If you want to stay fragile, chubby, afraid and unhealthy, this isn’t for you …

WATCH NOW!

If you’re not in the group (WHY NOT??), however, respond and let me know, perhaps there is a way to get it to you too, if you’re nice 😉

P.S. Here are 4 more ways you can become happier and healthier:

1. Podcasts

Some of the greatest insights and healing for me, have come from listening to podcasts in the last few years. This long-form type of communication, I’ve found, has been extremely important for understanding context, while learning how to make sustainable change.

That’s why I have started to find ways to get our story on some podcasts, and give you an opportunity to really go deep with us, and see what we’re all about. That way, you can decide if this tribe fits your personality. Click the link below to go to our podcast page, where you can find all our episodes!

2. Rise

Rise is the story of ‘never feeling powerful … to … never feeling powerless’. It’s about John Bair’s life, why he does what he does and how his suffering created happiness.

This handwritten book takes you through an intimate, yet, self-revealing journey, which allows you to implant yourself into the story, as it relates to your own, and reveal the steps you’ll need to take, in order to make change a successful reality.
