I really hope you had a great day yesterday, and got to spend that time with people you enjoyed being with 🙂
It’s now Black Friday here the US, a day where businesses often discount there product or service and you, the consumer, can choose the deal you want …. or something like that.
Before we get to that, I have a quick story.
I was talking to one of my best friends on Wednesday and he was asking me how he can stop letting bullies get to him.
You see, he is visually impaired and legally blind, which you would think that somebody wouldn’t pick on a person for something like that (or anything really), in this day and age.
However, my buddy was shooting pool with his team in a league (yes, he shoots pool, albeit, with some eye strain) and in between shots he was checking out something on his phone, which he has to hold really close to his face so he can see.
Some douche from across the bar starts giving him crap for looking at his phone so close, to which my buddy ignores because he doesn’t want an issue.
Except that this ass-clown actually comes over and grabs his phone out of his hand and gives him more shit for ignoring him.
My friend doesn’t really know this guy and shouldn’t have to deal with someone who does something like that.
As my friend goes to grab his phone back, the guy pushes my buddy back down, thus physically touching him now.
I was always taught never to start a fight, only to finish it, and this situation would’ve warranted a beat down for this jerk-off.
That didn’t quite happen, however, the guy did end up on the floor and my buddy grabbed his phone back.
He worked to stay cool and eventually got out of there, but he’s upset and doesn’t understand why he has to still deal with that stuff.
And the truth is, he doesn’t.
It’s just difficult to be a better person in a situation like that, rise above him and say something like this to the guy:
“I’m really sorry that your life is so bad that you feel the need to bully me because of a visual impairment which leaves me legally blind. I didn’t ask for this either, like you didn’t ask for a shitty life, and so, it is my hope that you find some peace and happiness in life, like I’m about to do as I leave this space. Thanks for understanding :)”
Easier said than done, right?
Here’s the truth, if you really want people to stop being mean or pick on you, learn to rise above it, ignore it, or it will eat away at you.
And guess what, that’s what they want because they’re still in your head.
If you want to be happy, and someone says something that makes you unhappy, they win, because you lost your emotional equanimity, and thus, you became a slave to the power of their words.
You have a choice there, like my buddy does, to meet negativity with the power of your own healing, and truly rise above it.
The only way to see change, is to be the change.
Forgiving ignorance with unencumbered grace.
And so, for this Black Friday ‘Deal’ … You just got free advice.
You’re welcome 😉

Some of the greatest insights and healing for me, have come from listening to podcasts in the last few years. This long-form type of communication, I’ve found, has been extremely important for understanding context, while learning how to make sustainable change.

Rise is the story of ‘never feeling powerful … to … never feeling powerless’. It’s about John Bair’s life, why he does what he does and how his suffering created happiness.
