Knee Pain to NO Pain?!?

One of my students was having trouble with some knee pain recently.

A few years back she had one knee replaced, and now the other is getting some arthritis which is starting to ‘talk’ to her and last week caused her some sleepless nights.

So much so that she thought she would have to stop classes for awhile to get some cortizone and/or ‘pain masking’ injections.

It’s not her fault and I’m certainly not upset with her for doing as ‘prescribed’, however, I really detest the line of thinking she has been conditioned to believe.

A person is in pain, so yeah, let’s just mask it and forget about the underlying cause(s) which bring on the symptoms in the first place – which causes a ton more structural damage because movement is distorted.

Now, I know there are extreme cases where the pain does need to be masked, however, after that period it is truly imperative to induce healing because the body can heal itself if we give it what it needs.

No, it probably won’t grow back a limb, however, most things can be ‘improved or calmed down’ with some self-knowledge about how your body actually works.

I’m comfortable saying that some things get better faster without medical intervention because even if you want to believe someone else’s word about your body, you have to live in it, own the operation of it and actually discover for yourself what is true for your body.

Self-myofascial or ‘active release’ techniques have been tools in my personal tool box to help me bring back a lot of functionality in some of my crusty-ass joints that were beat up from football.

In my professional lane, I can show someone how to do it on themselves and point them in the same educational direction I went, which was a few scientific workbooks about the subject matter which helped me learn how to do this on myself in the first place.

After talking to Becky and suggesting she come in before class to try something that wouldn’t hurt her worse, and if it didn’t work she could always go get the shot, she agreed to come in.

Here’s what happened, in her words …

It’s stuff like that which helps a person to start to believe they can play and have fun again, like when they were kids.

Becky’s able to move and do stuff with no ‘nervy’ pain and manageable arthritis, because of like less than 5 minutes of soft tissue massage work …

1. Podcasts

Some of the greatest insights and healing for me, have come from listening to podcasts in the last few years. This long-form type of communication, I’ve found, has been extremely important for understanding context, while learning how to make sustainable change.

That’s why I have started to find ways to get our story on some podcasts, and give you an opportunity to really go deep with us, and see what we’re all about. That way, you can decide if this tribe fits your personality. Click the link below to go to our podcast page, where you can find all our episodes!
