A reader sent me an email last week wondering if I had any helpful suggestions on what to do to reach her goals.
It’s hard to give direction without knowing the destination, so I asked what her goal is.
I also replied, “Get started … with something … even if it’s walking.”
I felt comfortable suggesting walking, because the truth is, that’s what it takes, at least one step forward – and ‘just walking’ is not to be underestimated, as it’s quite valuable for your health.
Now the truth is, once she has put in the work to really understand the goal(s), then she can actually take the first true step, which is to give herself permission to change.
THAT is definitely not to be underestimated, because if you don’t give yourself permission, you won’t change … period.
You’ll continue to ‘act’ like you’re going to change … but nothing will ACTUALLY change.
Giving yourself permission puts your subconscious on notice that you’re not going to continue to let those old, damaging, self-limiting patterns continue to sabotage your future success.
That decision makes it ‘real’ in the brain and essentially is like pulling the string to unravel the ball of yarn …
That’s really all it takes.
Which seems really easy in theory … “just give myself permission to change”.
In reality, people get stuck because they are afraid, or they don’t have enough evidence to believe that they can actually change, so they sabotage instead … it’s a like a lateral step, instead of moving forward …
Climb right up to the edge of change, give yourself that pep talk to ‘jump’ … and if you wait to long, then you’ll convince yourself ‘it’s not the right time’, or ‘it’s only this once, i’ll do it tomorrow’, or ‘insert lame excuse’ …
For awhile, this lateral step can ‘fool your brain’ into believing you’re doing something … because it meets some needs on a low level … that is until reality catches up and nothing has changed, so you feel even crappier because you didn’t do anything, and you know it.
What are your thoughts … is it easy to get started, or what do you feel is holding you back?
Look forward to hearing from you on this in the comments below.
