When life happens

I was talking with one of my students yesterday because I hadn’t seen him at the gym in awhile.

We are both members of a local networking group and had become friendly over the last year-ish.

One day, my 30 second ‘commercial’ really hit him in his soft spot apparently, and he came up to me after the meeting to say: “I think you’re going to change my life John”.

I was intrigued by his comment and he asked to meet with me later that week.

We did meet and had a great conversation for over an hour, where he poured his heart out and told me stuff he hadn’t told others that he was dealing with.

I used to think it was just coincidence that people felt comfortable telling me really private things they wouldn’t tell others – now I know it’s my superpower.

It means I’ve created a space where people feel as if they can truly unburden themselves and face their scary fears … not easy to do.

After our initial conversations, and like a month of him ‘getting ready’, he came up to me in the beginning of October and handed me money, telling me he was in!

And for that first month, he was … coming to class 2x a week consistently.

That is, until his 8 year old son dropped to the floor one night and could hardly get up to his feet.

Long story short, the boy had testicular torsion and when he tried to stand up his ‘cajones’ caused unreal amounts of pain, because the cords had wrapped themselves around each other.

Can you imagine?

I have a pair … and never want to feel that kind of pain.

So yesterday, as we were chatting at the networking meeting, the first time I’d seen him since his boys incident, he asked to talk briefly outside.

He said sorry for not being in class recently, told me he wanted to come back and felt bad about his lack of progress.

To which I reminded him that his commitment to his son was the ‘work’ this past month and that when life happens, sometimes we have to shift gears with it.

He was relieved that I wasn’t mad (which don’t get me started on people who would’ve gotten mad) and so happy to tell me that he was still drinking water and taking a walk every morning.

After our initial conversation way back, he started incorporating these simple habits and lost 12 pounds before ever coming to class!

He got results from our first coaching session, without ever actually training here … cool, right?

Imagine when someone goes all the way in here, the kind of results that are waiting?!

The reality is, I used that lesson from his story to teach you the lesson in this post, because what I do is solve problems by meeting someone where they’re at, not fitting them into a system that doesn’t work for them.

I’m going to coach you in these emails until you pay me to go deeper, or until you hit that little button at the bottom of these emails and tell me you no longer want to hear from me.

It’s how I ensure that even when life happens, somebody cares enough about you to make sure you stay consistent and accountable to living the life you were born to live, your purpose.

What do you think about that?

I’d love to hear what you do when life happens, and the strategies you employ to ensure you get back on track … when you have a moment 🙂
