I was teaching class earlier this week and one of my long time students, like 5 years plus, was in class.
As we were warming up, she told me that a few people in her family recently said that she is ‘listing’ … as in ‘walking crooked, with her shoulder dropped’.
Usually when she was tired.
Now, there is no way for you to know this, however, I happen to know that she is going through a very tough time right now.
Someone in her family is very sick and things are constantly changing everyday as the disease progresses rapidly.
There have been all kinds of hospital visits, chemo, radiation, testing and lots of emotions.
It’s so draining on all your internal resources and wreaks havoc on your nervous system, that not much else, like work, is possible.
Coming to class keeps her ‘sane’ and gives her time for herself.
So, the first question I asked her was “Have they been saying you’re crooked in the last month to 6 weeks?”
That was the time frame between getting this horrible news and the present.
She said “Yep.”
And without saying too much out loud, because others were there, I just said to her “You’ve got a lot on your mind, it’s no wonder.”
She looked at me like “You think, really?”
The thing is, I know the look of being worn down and what stress does first hand, so it’s something I see before most.
Having known this woman a long time, she was more concerned that she was in fact, crooked, like her spine was getting scoliosis or something.
However after a couple questions, she understood that this perhaps was not a ‘exercise to fix it’ type thing, but a ride out the storm type thing.
Because in her typical humor, she said to her family “If I was crooked, John would tell me and help me fix it.”
And that’s the simple takeaway today.
Psychological burdens are heavy, and crushing.
You might not realize the weight of the world is literally changing your posture, making it look like you are ‘weighed down’.
Sometimes you just have to crack a joke, laugh, take a deep breath and go back into the ‘trenches’ of life.
I really feel for my student, because I can see what it’s doing to her.
It’s why I hug her, and all my students, after each class.
We all need to know we’re not alone.
Neither are you 😉
