A lost art :-(

There were 2 young women sitting at a table, on their chairs, enjoying a coke and a pretzel while spending the day at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, along with the rest of us on vacation this past weekend, when I saw the rarest of situations.

They were actually having a REAL conversation!

Face to face, eyeball to eyeball.

Don’t get me wrong, they both had cellphones and were all Mickey’d up, however, it was wonderful to see some ‘millenials’ or whatever, communicating for real, for real.

They couldn’t have been more than 20 ish, maybe younger, and the coolest freaking part of it … they were using sign language, as the one young woman was deaf.

It gave me hope.

And then I looked around these 2 women, and I saw a family of 5, with 4 of them on their phones playing games, while Dad was getting everyone treats.

In another direction, there was the couple who had a newborn and they were dancing with their baby while we were in ‘Africa’, listening to a Harambe musical concert.

Sitting on a stone wall by himself, a ‘bigger fella’ looked like he was resting, as he appeared tired and at the same time so alone, lost in his thoughts, almost disconnected from where he was.

And then another large family walked by, and one of the teens looked like he was having an anxiety attack, his eyes kept blinking, he was twitching a little, and the moment seemed real big for him … but no one else was talking to him, or even noticed …

I didn’t have a chance to turn around and say something reassuring to him, and although I never want anyone to feel alone, I don’t always win all those battles, it’s impossible.

It’s also not something I take on ‘like that’.

It’s just that my ‘superpower’, if you will, is that: I see people.

Not dead people, either.

No, I mean, I can look at a person and instantly asses what emotional state they’re in.

In fact, and go with me, because this sounds weird, but I can feel their energy, and it usually happens before I see them.

The 2 girls signing, and the parents dancing, their energy was joyous and seductively intoxicating.

I sensed it in my body before I looked around to see what was happening.

The family of 5 … look, I love treats, and they were at Disney, sheesh … but they didn’t ‘feel’ like they were truly connected and enjoying it all.

Same with the bigger fella and the kid with anxiety.

Their energy felt heavy, tension filled and hurt my body because when I looked at them, I just wanted to hug them, and make it stop hurting …

I could be wrong …

Most people tend to work so hard to avoid the highs and lows of life, they spend most of it in the middle … not really striving, not really thriving.

Other people get pushed into the extremes and they shut down, or have really broken strategies cobbled in place to meet their emotions …

And some do the work necessary in order to earn the right to know how to experience joy, and sadness, AND still move forward in life.

The thing that gives people that ‘balance’ in life, 10 times out of 10, is to understand how to communicate their emotional needs EFFECTIVELY.

The girls talking and the people dancing with their baby, were all communicating … and it felt wonderful.

The family of 5, big fella, and anxiety kid, were also communicating … and it felt scary.

So let me ask you, {first_name}, do you believe you know how to effectively communicate, and/or communicate your emotional needs?

I know I’ve been working on that for a while myself, and the work never ceases.

Look forward to your reply 🙂
